Level · 14 weeks
Citizenship, Ausbildung, permanent residence — they all want B1.
B1 is the level the German state asks for the most. Naturalisation (Einbürgerung) requires it. Permanent residence (Niederlassungserlaubnis §9 AufenthG) requires it. The majority of three-year paid Ausbildung contracts list it as the language entry, and several Fachhochschule bachelor programs — especially in nursing and IT — accept B1 instead of B2. The Goethe-Zertifikat B1 is modular since 2013: Lesen, Hören, Schreiben, Sprechen are scored independently, so if you fail one section you only retake that one. Most students need around 350 hours of cumulative German study to sit it with a real chance of passing on the first attempt.
