Student visa
- Who it is for
- Pakistani nationals with a confirmed admission letter from a German university (Bachelor's, Master's, PhD) or a Studienkolleg.
- German language proof
- Most degree programs require Goethe-Zertifikat C1, DSH-2, TestDaF 4 across all four sections, or telc Deutsch C1 Hochschule. English-taught programs only require IELTS or TOEFL; no German is mandatory for the visa itself, though A1–A2 is strongly recommended for daily life. Studienkolleg programs accept B1 entry.
- Financial proof
- Proof of €11,904 for one year (rate set by Bundesregierung for 2024–2025, updated annually) in a German blocked account (Sperrkonto). Alternatives accepted: scholarship letter, formal sponsor declaration (Verpflichtungserklärung), or proof of own funds equivalent to BAföG maximum.
- Realistic timeline
- Process from embassy appointment to visa issuance: typically 6 to 12 weeks at the German Mission Islamabad. Add 4–8 weeks of slot waiting time. Total realistic planning: 4–6 months from admission letter to flight.
- Path to permanent residence
- After successful study completion, applicants can switch to an 18-month job-search residence permit under §20 AufenthG, then to a Skilled Worker permit or EU Blue Card. Permanent residence (Niederlassungserlaubnis) possible 2 years after starting qualified work (§18c).
What people get wrong about Student visa
- 01APS certificate (Akademische Prüfstelle Pakistan) is mandatory before applying. Issued by the German Embassy Islamabad. Without APS, the file is rejected at counter.
- 02Health insurance proof required at visa stage — usually expat travel insurance for the first 90 days, then public insurance (TK, AOK, Barmer) once enrolled.
- 03Working hours during studies: up to 140 full days or 280 half days per calendar year (§16b Abs. 3).
