Section 01
What Ausbildung actually is
Ausbildung is structured, paid vocational training regulated by the Berufsbildungsgesetz (BBiG). It comes in two forms:
- Duale Ausbildung — 3 to 3.5 years, split between an employer (3–4 days per week, paid) and a Berufsschule (1–2 days, classroom). Covers most trades, IT, mechatronics, hospitality, retail.
- Schulische Ausbildung — full-time vocational school, common in regulated health professions like Pflegefachkraft (nursing), Physiotherapie, MTLA (medical-technical laboratory assistant). Increasingly paid since the Pflegeberufereformgesetz of 2020.
At the end of the training period, you sit a federal exam administered by the Industrie- und Handelskammer (IHK) or Handwerkskammer (HWK). On passing, you receive a Gesellenbrief or IHK-Zertifikat — a federally recognised qualification valid across the EU under Directive 2005/36/EC on Mutual Recognition of Professional Qualifications.
